Building Technology Heritage Library
APT International Digitisation
Client: Association of Preservation Technology International
The Building Technology Heritage Library (BTHL) project was a comprehensive digitisation initiative aimed at preserving and making accessible a vast collection of technical and trade literature. Overseen by the Association for Preservation Technology International (APT), the BTHL serves as an invaluable online resource for architectural conservators and historians. The project involved the meticulous scanning of 363 documents, ranging from brief catalogues to extensive publications of up to 1,290 pages. In total, 74,274 pages were digitised, contributing significantly to the library's growing repository of historical materials.
A key aspect of the project was the inclusion of materials from Professor Lewis’s library, which greatly expanded the BTHL’s scope. Previously focused primarily on American documents, the addition of these materials introduced important works from other parts of the world, enriching the library's global perspective. Among these additions was a 1904 tile, terracotta, and fireplace catalogue from the French company Emile Muller & Cie, chosen as the BTHL’s 10,000th upload. This beautifully illustrated catalogue provides a fascinating glimpse into the architectural terracotta and ceramic tile offerings available in early 20th century France.
The digitisation of these materials has had a profound impact on the BTHL, enhancing its accessibility and utility for users worldwide. By making these documents freely available online, the project has facilitated greater access to historical trade literature, supporting research, education, and conservation efforts.
